Halloween addition and subtraction within 20 for 1st grade

First graders are working toward fluency with addition and subtraction within 20. Practicing the two operations on back-to-back days helps children notice that they are linked.

There are two Halloween pages for this: one with 20 addition facts with sums up to 20, and one with 20 subtraction facts within 20. Each has an answer key page. These pages work as a quick fluency check in October: note which facts take longest and practice only those.

Tips

• Do addition one day and subtraction the next.
• Use 'make ten' for sums like 8 + 6: 8 + 2 + 4.
• Think addition to subtract: 15 - 8 means 8 + what = 15?
