Make six deliveries with paper and counters.
You need paper, a pencil and up to 20 small counters suitable for your learner. Draw six houses. Each solved question lights one window.
- Choose the number range. Start within 10. Move to 20 when your learner is ready for those numbers.
- Tell the story. “We are bringing lights to a snowy village. How many lights will this house have?”
- Build and solve. For 3 + 4, set out three counters and add four. Count seven. For 8 − 3, start with eight and take away three: five remain.
- Talk about the answer. Ask “How did you work it out?” Count again together when needed, then shade a window.
- Take turns until six windows glow. An adult can read each question aloud. Pause or stop whenever it suits the learner.
